Author Julie Cash, Sophie Finn Elementary School
In this lesson, students observe a sample of pond water containing many insects and other invertebrates. They identify and sort the organisms, then draw and write about one. This introduces students to how scientists identify and classify animals. It follows a trip to Shaupeneak Ridge in Esopus, where students became acquainted with Louisa Pond. A sample of pond water was brought back to the classroom for observation and lessons.
