Welcome to our new blog! In this first post, I'm sharing a little about THV and myself. Going forward we'll feature voices from throughout the Hudson Valley.
What's really going to make this work is hearing from you - what are you doing, what are you thinking, and what are you reading? Tell us. Comment on posts,

us, or both. We'll all be richer for it.
I grew up in southwest Michigan. It's flat. REALLY flat! Wolverines are more common than Allegheny woodrats, at least I think they are. Then I lived in Washington, DC, also pretty flat, no wolverines.
My partner and I have raised our soon-to-be-driving son here in the Hudson Valley and even after almost two decades barely a day goes by that I don't notice how beautifully it rolls.
The beauty, though, is not why I'm committed to Teaching the Hudson Valley. At first it was serendipity - it came my way and intrigued me.
Then I met you - the region's K-12 teachers plus the many interpreters, environmental educators, curators, and others dedicated to the Valley's cultural, historic, and natural treasures.
I wasn't surprised at how hard you work -- numerous studies show that teachers typically work many more hours than the public sees and the work of site staff is even less visible.
I wasn't surprised that so many of you are smart, interesting, and fun to be around. It seems to almost come with your job titles.
And I wasn't surprised at how much you care about kids. How else could you bear all the "Whys," not to mention the runny noses?
What did surprise me was that you didn't know each other or work together much. Whether in schools or museums, historic sites or parks, you work to prepare the next generation to be responsible community members and stewards.
"No one cares for places or ecosystems they don't know," you've told me.
Let's "hook" kids on history, science, and other "real" subjects, not just phonics, you argue.
"There has to be more to learning than tests and drills," you keep insisting.
That's how YOU hooked ME. With your ideas and the belief that place-based education can help.
Teaching the Hudson Valley may be like a scup in the River, but I'll stick with it - and with you. Thanks for your hard work and for letting me learn about it!
