Welcome September trivia contest players! This month's "So You Think You Know the Hudson Valley?" contest asks the question:

Where am I?

Answer

Thomas Cole National Historic Site (Cedar Grove), Catskill, NY (map)

Cedar Grove is the home of Hudson River School of Art founder Thomas Cole, who inspired Frederic Church and many other landscape painters of the mid-nineteenth century.

This is where American Art was born.

WHAT STUDENTS CAN LEARN HERE

Here you can enjoy a guided tour of Cole's home and studio, see a film about his art, stroll through flower gardens and enjoy a sweeping view of the Catskill Mountains.

School programs at Thomas Cole National Historic Site promote learning through participation in history, art, literature, and preservation. Students’ investigations begin when the class receives a package of evidence in the mail as the basis for pre-visit activities.
The evidence includes documents, photographs and a powerpoint presentation introducing the class to Thomas Cole, the Hudson River School of Art, and Cedar Grove.

Afterwards students visit the historic site and further explore the life and creative output of Thomas Cole. Students examine data, gather information, and draw conclusions from their personal experiences.

All school programs meet New York State learning standards for grades K-12.
