Sat., Sept. 24, is National Public Lands Day and Sun., the 25th, marks the final day in the annual Hudson River Valley Ramble. (See below for more on these annual events.)

NPLD and the Ramble offer perfect -- and nearby -- opportunities like these to get you outdoors.

Daniel Wolff is a writer and documentary film producer based in the Valley. With Jonathan Demme, he co-produced Right to Return: New Home Movies from New Orleans and New Orleans: Been in the Storm Too Long for Tavis Smiley on PBS.  Wolff’ s latest book, The Fight for Home: How (Parts of) New Orleans Came Back is scheduled for publication in 2012 by Bloomsbury USA.

Daniel, a long-time education activist whose children attended public schools in Nyack, has presented at THV institutes so we asked him how teachers might approach Irene. Here’s what he said.

daniel_wolff.jpg"If I were talking to teachers about teaching the storm, I think I'd concentrate on before and after.

"That is, in Katrina and I suspect in Irene, many of the areas hardest hit tend to be those that were neglected beforehand.

"Who lives in your town's flood plain? Poor people. So when the hurricane comes, they get the worst of it. What does that tell us?

"If a class were to go back and look at why the, say, trailer park is located by the banks of the river that flooded, it might be an interesting study. There are a million examples.

"In Mamaroneck, for instance, the region that regularly floods is called the Flats. Used to be majority black population, nowadays majority Latino. Is that a coincidence?

"Related question: why are the industrial sections of a town so often in low-lying areas? What goes with this approach is an investigation of pre-destination: I think anyone looking would find that authorities knew where the floods would be worse, who would be hit worse. Often there're studies going back decades predicting who will be flooded out. Yet solutions haven't been found. Why and how is this possible?

"The after part is to look at how we respond to the damage. For instance:

Participants in this year's institute -- and others -- say they're eager to use technology and social media, but not for their own sake. They want new media tools that deepen their interactions with students and families and enhance the magic of teaching and learning.slide_toolsversusteaching.jpg

So . . . from time to time we'll use this space to share resources that can help accomplish that goal.

A great go-to guide is Edutopia's Top Ten Tips for Teaching with New Media.

Digital Is (National Writing Project) collects ideas, reflections, and stories about teaching writing in our digital, interconnected world.

"Using Web 2.0 Tools to Enhance Learning and Engagement," Kay Gormley and Peter McDermott's summer institute presentation introduces a range of tools plus how and why to use them. Slide show. Handout.

They're here! Resources from the 2011 Summer Institute, Place & The Digital Native: Using Technology & Social Media to Teach the Hudson Valley, are now available in the Institutes & Workshops section.

In addition to materials from 13 workshop presentations, for the first time we are able to offer a video of the keynote presentation. Dina Strasser is someone you don't want to miss, and now you don't have to! We hope you like her presentation as much as we did. It certainly fired us up for three days of exploration and inquiry.

10 Tools & Techniques Attendees Said They'll Try in Their School, Museum, Park or Historic Site

  1. Create a Google Earth activity using longitude + latitude of famous or mysterious places after students try to locate them with a flat map
  2. Develop a multi-disciplinary lesson for Hudson River study
  3. Try PhotoPeach for open house and Museum Box for a fairytale unit at school
  4. Make my own smartboard
  5. Use Google Earth to show local areas with flora and fauna to prepare for field trips
  6. Design a walking tour to connect kids to history of their neighborhood
  7. Use GPS to go on a trail at school
  8. Start blogging with Wordpress
  9. Skype with another classroom somewhere else in the world
  10. Use Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System (HRECOS) in the classroom
We'd love to hear from you as the year goes on. Send us updates, and we'll share them here.
