We're departing from our usual regional focus because we know teachers may need resources to answer students questions about Haiti and the earthquake. Please share your suggestions.

The National History Education Clearinghouse blog has links for a wide range of resources for teaching about Haiti.

Teaching About Haiti is a free, downloadable resource including a list of over 40 books, films, and organizations for different ages. The publisher, Teaching for Change believes students should be encouraged to contribute to relief efforts and to learn more about Haiti's history. "Better informed citizens," they write, "can advocate for respectful and constructive relations with Haiti in the months and years ahead."

natgeohaitib.jpgFifth grade teacher Bob Peterson is using a one page sheet, Haiti by the Numbers in his math class. It's based on a Feb. 9 article by Bill Quigley. National Geographic for Kids' People and Places in the Spotlight is now featuring Haiti with 16 facts, five photos,a map, and a lesson on earth-quakes and volcanoes, grades 3-5.

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research has posted more than 40 downloadable maps of Haiti.

If you have students of Haitian descent or others with family members directly affected by the earthquake the NYSUT recommends the resources at Colorin Colorado, a service of WETA. PBS Teachers also has two sets of materials and lesson ideas for use in high school social studies classes.

Rethinking Schools is sharing a draft role play for secondary students developed by Linda Christensen, director of the Oregon Writing Project, and a Rethinking Schools editor. It focuses on how Haitians fought for independence from France. If you are unfamiliar with organizing role plays, RS has instructions from others for use as a "template." And, finally, if you're ready to think about the summer, a not-for-profit teachers' travel group, www.FriendsBeyondBorders.net, is planning to visit Haitian refugees, migrant workers, human rights groups, and others working on the Haitian-Dominican border this August.
