The Albany Institute of History & Art (AIHA) has something for everyone, and you can see for yourself if you sign up for Bringing Albany to Your Classroom, one of five field experience options during THV's upcoming institute, Reading, Writing, and Thinking the Hudson Valley.

What: One of the oldest museums in the U.S. with the best collection documenting life in the Upper Hudson Valley from the 17th century to present. Summer is a great time to visit -- with great weekend deals in July and August, plus art activities, camps, and lectures. AIHA also houses a library and a very active education department.albanyinst3.jpg

Where: 125 Washington Avenue, Albany.

Why: The collections of the Albany Institute works of art, written documents, and historical artifacts tell the story of the Hudson River, how it marks the land and defines the people, events, and ideas that have traveled along its course.

“Sharing these stories -- integral parts of our history and culture -- through education programs is a critical part of the mission of the Albany Institute.”-- Erika Sanger, Education Director

Programs for Students: From hands-on art instruction to New York people and places, local art history to women’s suffrage, colonial America to ancient Egypt, and more! Programs for K-12, are offered on-site and by video-conference. AIHA's 2010-11 Student and Teacher Program brochure, including a new program, Object Connections: Hudson River Panorama.

Object Connections is a traveling version of the
Hudson River Panorama exhibit, which draws from AIHA's collection to demonstrate the evolution of the culture and landscape of the Valley. For Object Connections the museum created touchable reproductions, which can be shipped to schools. As a museum educator presents the exhibit's lessons, in person or by video, students get to see and even handle the artifacts!

See for yourself! Check out Bringing Albany to Your Classroom one of five field experiences at THV's summer institute. Erika Sanger, AIHA education director, will lead part of the day's activities. She works on programs at the museum and collaborates with other sites and teachers. In fact....

Have you seen her lessons? THV features two units co-authored by Sanger and making use of AIHA education resources. One is for
grade 5, the other grade 7.
